Thursday, March 27, Nintendo announced a variety of titles during their Nintendo Direct presentation. Within these titles, one stood out amongst the rest. “Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream” was announced with a teaser trailer and a projected release in 2026. Fans have been practically begging for a sequel for years now, the live comments section in previous Nintendo Directs were always full of viewers questioning where the sequel was to their beloved 3DS title.
“Tomodachi Life” was originally released on April 18, 2013 on the Nintendo 3DS. The game is centered around Miis, the customizable characters featured on Nintendo consoles. Players create their own look-alike Mii and as many others as they want. Whether it be friends, family members, celebrities, or even fictional characters; players have complete creative freedom. All of the Miis live together on an island while the player solves their problems and bears witness to their wacky shenanigans, blossoming relationships, and silly drama.
This announcement brought in a surge of activity and excitement from fans. Fans are excitedly awaiting more details on the game, flooding social media with posts. A multitude of fans posted the teaser trailer with the song “Take Me To The King” by Tamela Mann in the background as a way of expressing their shock and gratitude. Many are closely examining the teaser trailer for new content or hidden details. As they share their findings online, more and more fans are listing their hopes and expectations for the new release. A common hope from longtime fans is that the sequel will still have the quirky charm and humor of the original title. “Tomodachi Life” was held in high regard for its random and peculiar comedy. Miis could be having a rap battle one minute and then visit space the next, constantly engaging in silly activities and speaking goofy lines.

“Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream” is almost guaranteed to be a massive success for Nintendo. The original game sold 6.72 million copies, placing it 11th for best-selling 3DS games. Even now, the game is gaining more players thanks to emulators and resellers. The sequel will likely be released for Nintendo’s new console, the Nintendo Switch 2, as well.
