Friday, May 2, Cambria Center of the Arts (CCAT) put on their second to last performance of famous composer Steven Sondheim’s “Into the Woods.”
“Into the Woods” is a classic Broadway retelling of various fairy tales, intertwining the stories of infamous characters such as Cinderella and Little Red Riding Hood, concluding with a morbid twist. The musical is beautifully written and was performed just as gracefully. Not only was this production incredibly impressive, it was undoubtedly hilarious. Director Dakota Simpson did an outstanding job molding his actors into his vision and crafting a production that looked, sounded, and felt incredible for all who were lucky enough to watch it.
Simpson shared how complex yet rewarding the process of directing was for him. “My experience directing ‘Into the Woods’ was inherently difficult,” he said. “Like anything, it was also incredibly exciting and rewarding.” Despite the hurdles he encountered alongside the cast and crew, Simpson persevered. “Scheduling was a challenge. In community theatre, you are at the mercy of the schedules of others,” he said. Simpson ensured that the show came out beautifully, detailing the performance with comedic moments that induce laughter so hard it hurts, heart wrenching climaxes, and beautiful chords, all within a nine week rehearsal period.
Ultimately, Simpson’s efforts resulted in a remarkable production that all involved should be proud of. Of course, the cast and crew pulled their weight as well. The lights and sound, conducted by Simpson and Jane Lloyd (who also voice acted for The Giant) were perfectly coordinated and complimented the ongoing scenes very well. Additionally, the costumes adorning the actors were stunning, completing the fantasy feeling of the show. Costume designer Karen Russu did an exemplary job fashioning the actors into their respective roles.
All of the actors were phenomenal, they sank completely into their characters. Kelly Fitzgerald, who performed as The Witch, was especially spectacular in immersing herself into her character. Fitzgerald portrayed The Witch’s dynamic character arc with comedic flair and dramatic aura. On a similar note, Moorea Prunty offered a hilarious portrayal of her character, Little Red Riding Hood. Prunty is a veteran at CCAT and this performance was certainly her most impressive. Not only did she tickle the audience’s funnybone with her humour, but her vocal and acting skills were top notch. Cinderella, played by Carlei Herman, also had out-of-this-world vocality. Herman’s voice perfectly encapsulated Cinderella’s princess personality and independent nature.
This production was uniquely charming and infinitely entertaining. The audience was howling, sobbing, and cheering throughout the night. The team behind the show received a well-deserved standing ovation to conclude their performance.
