On Nov. 1, 2024 singer-songwriter mxmtoon released her new indie album, “liminal space.” This marks her seventh album, her previous being “plum blossom (revisited).” One short glance at her work can reveal the growth she’s made as an artist. While she’s remained true to her style throughout the years, “liminal space” is uniquely refreshing and introspective.

The definition of the term, “liminal space” correlates directly to the themes in mxmtoon’s album. A liminal space is a transitional or transformative space, a setting that insinuates change or growth. mxmtoon’s previous albums have focused on nostalgic longing and yearning for the past, this new work creates a spectacle out of her personal journey. While there are still strong aspects of reflecting on the past, the album ultimately serves as a tribute to mxmtoon’s newfound transformation.

The album mostly consists of mellow electronic feels, but songs like “i hate texas” feature fierce and fresh instrumentals that differentiate from mxmtoon’s traditional lofi-esk style. Additionally, the album has two tracks with featured artists. Track nine, “the situation (Ft. Kero Kero Bonito)” and track 11, “now’s not the time (Ft. Luna Li)” both include partnering artists that blend quite magnificently with mxmtoon’s unique sound. “liminal space” branches out from the familiar noise of mxmtoon’s discography, while still remaining true to the artist’s roots.

While the album has only recently been released, tour dates have already been announced. “the liminal space tour” is set to begin on Feb. 18, 2025 in Nashville, TN. Fans are eager to hear mxmtoon’s new music played for a live audience for the first time. Tracks such as, “god?” and “white out” promise to be even more impactful when accompanied by live vocals and instrumental.

This new album has the potential to push forward mxmtoon’s career and provide a success that exceeds that of the fame she experienced in 2019 with her song, “prom dress.” While the album has yet to reach the charts, it’s already a standout in her repertoire of music.
