What Nikki Glaser Learned From Jo Koy’s Golden Globes Flop
by Haley Hart
February 5, 2025On Jan. 5, comedian Nikki Glaser, made history as the first solo female Golden Globes host at the 82nd Golden Globes Awards. Glaser’s performance was extremely well received by critics and fellow comics alike, which caused many to reflect on previous host, Jo Koy.
Koy also made history as the first Filipino-American to host the Golden Globes. His monologue landed fairly well, however the night took a horrid turn when he decided to poke fun at "Barbie,” saying it was based on a "plastic doll with big boobies," attempted to poke fun at Taylor Swift, and ended up throwing his writers under the bus.
"Some I wrote, some other people wrote," Jo Koy said during the event. "Yes, I got the gig 10 days ago! You want a perfect monologue? Yo, shut up. You're kidding me, right? Slow down, I wrote some of these and they are the ones you are laughing at."
Koy’s hosting, which was ultimately viewed as a complete fail, left many wondering how Glaser’s performance was going to pan out. Glaser told Variety, "[Koy’s performance] taught me the importance of contextualizing yourself to the room as a comedian. Comedians, we would love to be thought of in the same light as these A-listers, but we just aren't."
Glaser shared that she believes Koy's monologue would have been very well received and praised if he acknowledged "Who am I?" then praised him as someone who "kills harder than anyone I've seen kill before — to his audience."
Many pointed out the difference between Glaser and Koy being Glaser’s background as a “roast comic,” which is more “Golden Globes speed,” whereas Koy is focused more on, according to Yahoo Entertainment, “cultural quirks he sees within his Filipino culture,” noting, “Koy’s audiences eat it up, but the 2023 Golden Globes were not Koy’s crowd.”
Glaser’s final remarks as to how she planned to avoid Koy’s fate, while giving him kudos were, “He’s a guy that kills harder than anyone I’ve seen kill before — to his audience. So I think he thought that would be the vibe there,” adding, “That was a little naive.” She shared that she planned on “going the other way,” which served her right as her performance was highly praised.
