On Feb. 8, 2025, Templeton High School’s Drama program hosted their annual theatre festival, informally known as “Theatrefest.” Schools from across the Central Coast came together to celebrate the performing arts. The day was filled with group performances from each school, a variety of theatre-based workshops, and plenty of social activities for the students. Schools invited this year include Paso Robles High School, Tehachapi High School, Atascadero High School, San Luis Obispo High School, and Morro Bay High School. While the festival is a longstanding tradition at Templeton High, this is only MBHS’ third year attending since returning from quarantine.
Theatrefest is both planned and executed by Templeton High’s theatre market and managing class, an impressive group of students with a keen passion for the arts and an inspiring quality of leadership. As groups of students began to filter in around 9 a.m., mingling in the multipurpose room before being led into the performing arts centre for the performances. The group performances are the most anticipated part of the day for most students. When asked what their favorite part of the day was, Atascadero improv team member Alia Luna said, “Seeing all the different performances and the different genres that people bring to the stage.” Similarly, another member of Atascadero’s improv team, Milo Graceffa, said, “I love getting to see everyone’s performances.”
Some of the highlights from the various performances include Templeton High’s preview of their spring musical, “The Drowsy Chaperone,” Atascadero High’s various comedic skits, and Paso Robles High’s student written parody of Harry Potter. Following the performances, students were sent to their first workshop of the day. Students attend three workshops in total, their options reigning from choreography to lights and sound. Each workshop is led by a seasoned professional from the area, many having graduated from the schools attending Theatrefest.
When workshops have concluded, students return to the Performing Arts Center for a few farewell theatre games and goodie bags. The day ends with a dance party on the stage, similar to that of a school dance. Theatrefest was a huge success this year and students are eagerly anticipating next year’s festival.
