Saturday, May 17, MBHS juniors, seniors, and select sophomores had the privilege of spending their night in San Luis Obispo’s Octagon Barn to celebrate prom.
This year’s theme was “Fly Me to the Moon,” inspired by the famous tune sung by Frank Sinatra. The decorations in the venue reflected this theme, the most notable piece being a large color-changing moon hanging above the center of the dance floor. Students were particularly fond of this year’s theme, junior Jocelyn Ocampo-Mateo said, “It sounds very simple but it was actually really cute and I love the different ways they incorporated the moon with the one indoors that lit up and the one outside.” Junior Acacia Mayo also displayed approval for the theme. They said, “I think the theme was very creative and very well coordinated with the decor of the dance.”
While the area outside the barn didn’t have as much allure as the interior, there were still a few amenities to enjoy. One of these amenities was a food truck selling mini donuts. Each student was given a coupon upon entry for a free serving of these sweet treats. The food offered at this year’s prom was impressive, especially the large charcuterie board sprawled across the snack table. Junior Jamie Hendel-De La O was particularly fond of this year’s menu. She said, “I think the highlight of prom was the food, which was really well done.”
This year was Hendel De-La O’s first time attending prom. As a newcomer to the annual dance, they felt it was entertaining, but nothing to write home about. She said, “For my first prom, it was okay, but not a standout event. I think there’s room for improvement for next year, but there were also lots of really cool parts.” Hendel De La O had issues with the music in particular, something Ocampo-Mateo resonated with. Ocampo-Mateo said, “It felt like it was music that wasn’t really danceable which kind of made it a little rough. I think as the night progressed it got better.”
Despite the music, students were still busting moves all night long. This year’s venue had plenty of dancing room as opposed to last year’s venue, The Monday Club. Ocampo-Mateo said, “In comparison to last year I felt like the venue was very open and spacious.” While both venues are gorgeous in their own manner, this year’s locale was optimal for the most popular event of the year.
Prom was most definitely a success this year for ASB and all those who attended. Junior class presidents Lucy Duprey and Aesa Vidati both did wonderful jobs planning the event. Junior class advisor Krissy Dupperron did astounding, especially this being her first year leading the team behind prom.
