Next week on Feb. 26 and 27, counselors Elena Smith and Allyson Dexter will be giving informative presentations to the students of MBHS. These presentations will recap basic information such as graduation requirements and helpful resources, but they will also present registration information for the 2025-2026 school year. Smith and Dexter will go over the list of course offerings for the next school year, introducing any new or returning classes and elaborating on the entrance process for classes with applications, such as ASB and Yearbook.

Across each school year, the MBHS counseling department delivers two main presentations; one in the fall, covering college information and MBHS counseling information catered toward each grade level, and one in the spring for registration for the following school year.

In the fall, the counselors really hone in on vital pieces of information students need in each grade level to succeed. “For freshmen we really focus on things like how to calculate your GPA and how to read your transcript, and each year progressively gets more in depth and in more detail into things students need to know in high school. And we always review stuff, you’ll always hear about graduation requirements and college entrance requirements,” said Dexter.

For the spring registration presentations coming up next week, MBHS counselors will go into detail about the registration process as a whole. “It does have a little bit of a recap, also with graduation requirements, college entrance requirements, and then the list of classes that are going to be offered for next fall are presented to the students,” said Smith, touching on the information provided in the spring presentations.

As the semester continues, students will be finalizing their class selections for next year to the best of their ability. “They begin that process of selecting their classes, filling out their registration form, and then what’s on that form they’ll put into Aeries, and then from there that generates an appointment with their counselor to review to be sure that they’ve selected the proper classes. And then the chance for students to ask any questions one-on-one, if need be,” said Smith. While this multi-step process may be daunting to some students, there are many resources on campus for students in all grade levels to get help with this process.

“Understanding the resources that are available [is important], we are here to help students fill in those gaps or questions and we are the go-to people who can help at least connect them where they need to,” said Smith. Other than Dexter and Smith, MBHS also has Julia MacIntosh, our college and career specialist who is able to help students with any specific questions regarding the college application process and the search for schools.

The MBHS counseling department has an abundance of resources available to all students to help them throughout their high school career. Counselors Dexter and Smith have a plethora of information ready to share with students, and through presentations in the fall and spring, they are able to effectively inform students in all grade levels.

“There’s information that you have to know and be armed with so that you can plan and create that pathway for whatever future goals you have for yourself, and this is one way to deliver it,” said Dexter.
