FAV! The Shortfilm
A sophomore in high school who loves volleyball and hanging with friends is the creator behind the film FAV!. Joss Finch is a part of the TV Video Production class at Morro Bay High School and is a co-anchor on Spyglass Today, MBHS’s video broadcast.
When the project of making a film for the Filmfest came about, she struggled to find a topic for her project and went back and forth from the idea of a high school athlete learning the balance between school and sports, and her final film idea of vlogging a tournament of a 16 year old volleyball team. Finch, who is a part of the Flight Academy Volleyball club (FAV), traveled to a tournament on an April weekend with her 16 iceman team and was inspired to vlog her experience throughout the trip. From this experience, she created a “cinematic, personal style” short film titled, FAV!.
In the film, Finch shares fun moments with her teammates and coaches, and time with her parents, as well as clips from the games. When I asked Joss about her process editing the film, she said, “I added different texts and sound effects to make it funny! I made sure to also include different types of clips that incorporated music, filters, effects, and different speeds.”
Among the many fun moments during filming and piecing together the clips, Finch shared that her favorite thing about filming this video was, “interviewing my teammates and being able to just whip out my phone to record all of the funny moments as memories.”
Finch finished the project just in time; the tournament was the same weekend the film was due and she had to edit the night of. Despite this challenge, Finch created a film that brings smiles and laughs to her viewers.
