“50501” protests, short for 50 protests, 50 states, one movement, have been making their mark on the U.S. ever since the start of the Trump presidency, aiming to spread awareness and defiance against the new administration. These protests are most often held at government offices like city halls, courthouses, and state capitols, supporting their mission for the protests to be directed at and noticed by the government.
Sarah Parker, a national coordinator for the protests, told CNN, “We are sending a clear and urgent message to the country and to those in power: the people are paying attention, we are organizing, and we will not accept authoritarian overreach, fascist policy, or the dismantling of our rights under the Constitution.” Although the effect on government officials and their actions may be relatively invisible now, at over 80 protests nationwide, the contributors and participants of these protests have already made their mark on millions of people worldwide, encouraging even foreign activists to continue the movement internationally.
Feb. 5, 2025, was the first nationwide protest, establishing the 50501 movement, with over 80 protests in all 50 states in just one day. The official website publicizes the other dates of nationwide protests, including Feb. 17, March 4, April 5, April 19, and May 1. As said on the 50501 website about their goal and mission, “The movement has mobilized millions of people and brought together a growing network of organizers and organizations, both new and established.”
The most recent nationwide protest was organized to take place on May Day, or May 1. May Day is an international holiday recognizing labor workers and their rights, as well as marking the beginning of spring for the northern hemisphere. 50501 protesters worked together to not only celebrate the holiday, but spread a new level of awareness for their causes.
Without protest groups like 50501, the United States and the world would be a different place. This would be done by creating an inclusive space for anyone to make a difference and express their views, and get their cause noticed worldwide.
