82nd Annual Golden Globes Brings A Cheerful Start to 2025
On Jan. 5, 2025, the 82nd annual Golden Globe Awards were held in Beverly Hills. For the TV Series awards, “Shogun” was the biggest winner of the night, winning all four of its nominations. “Emilia Pérez” took home the most awards for the Motion Picture awards, winning four of its 10 nominations. Other than the awards, the night had many fun highlights that have drawn the internet’s attention, including Tom Holland and Zendaya’s engagement and Nikki Glaser as the host for the night.
In one of the most prestigious Golden Globe Categories, the Best Motion Picture awards, “Emilia Pérez” won both the Best Motion Picture: Musical or Comedy award and the Best Motion Picture: Non-English Language award. Best Motion Picture: Drama was won by “The Brutalist,” which was also the film with the second most wins of the night, and the Best Motion Picture: Animated award was taken home by “Flow.”
The Best Performance in a Motion Picture - Drama awards were won by Fernanda Torres for “I’m Still Here” and Adrien Brody for “The Brutalist.” Demi Moore and Sebastian Stan each won Best Performance in a Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy for “The Substance” and “A Different Man,” respectively. The Cinematic and Box Office Achievement award was won by “Wicked,” which was the musical’s only win of the night.
Despite Jo Koy’s infamous hosting of the 2024 Golden Globes that gained him a lot of negative publicity for some of his jokes, many viewers and critics saw Nikki Glaser’s performance as a refreshing new voice. Cathy Applefeld Olson with Forbes Magazine said, “Thanks for reminding us that when you’ve got the right person, who understands the assignment and can execute with prowess, the results are magic,” in response to Glaser’s opening monologue.
Additionally, while not confirmed by the couple, many viewers of the 2025 Golden Globes are convinced that Tom Holland and Zendaya, a couple famous for their roles in “Spider-Man,” are recently engaged. Zendaya was seen flashing her new engagement ring on the red carpet and even to people seated near her before the awards show began.
Students at MBHS also had things to share about the Golden Globes and what they thought should have gotten more awards. “I feel like ‘Wicked’ really should have gotten more recognition for how much impact it had this year,” said Junior Naomi Gonzalez.
Overall, critics and viewers agree that the 2025 Golden Globes were successful. The movies and TV shows that won were generally regarded as deserving of these awards, and the refreshing nature of Glaser’s comedy as a host gives 2025 a good start in its award ceremonies.
