If you were to visit Cayucos and have a meal or drink at Schooner’s Wharf downtown anytime in the last 67 years, the presence of Randy Crozier would be revealed within minutes of arriving. With his Santa Claus-like beard, rosy cheeks, and wide, missing-tooth smile, Crozier has been believed to be the face of Cayucos by many locals and even visitors. And after a hard-fought battle with colon cancer starting several years ago, Randy Crozier unfortunately has left us on Dec. 15, 2024.
Besides his somewhat rugged but loving appearance, Crozier is remembered for being the initiator of countless memories and events in Cayucos – between being the life of all parties at Schooner’s; leading his band, the Motowners, in every Fourth of July parade that anyone can remember; handing out his homegrown pickles, tomatoes and squashes; and so much more. Randy Crozier lived a full and diverse life, all while somehow always staying in Cayucos, only leaving to visit his brother in Oregon or Spencer’s Market in Morro Bay. Though staying stationary in a tiny beach town for so much of his life may seem weird to some, it made enough sense to Randy for him to be satisfied with everything that Cayucos and its residents had to offer.+
Although it may seem like being the “life of the party” would be the most memorable thing about him, Randy Crozier is remembered by certain residents of Cayucos and neighboring towns, for being a loving friend, including to several local kids who have grown up having him as a companion. Dotty Humphrey, a Cayucos local, is one of the lucky kids who got to grow up with Randy as a figure in her younger life. “He would grow pumpkins for me and my family every Halloween,” Humphrey said, “I loved carving them.” This is just one of the special memories Randy made for her and several other kids. Some other activities and projects he did was fixing up and decorating red wagons and giving one to a few of his closest family-friends, and pickling his home-grown pickles to distribute to as many people as he could, going so far as to make his own stickers to put on the pickle jars, famously called Pirate Farms.
With the passing of such a memorable and lovable person as Randy Crozier, Cayucos and its residents will forever be affected by the relationships that he made and the things he did for the people he loved.
