The Incredible Creative Writing Club of MBHS
By Haley Hart
March 7, 2025Every Monday afternoon at MBHS, in room 505, Creative Writing Club is held, connecting a variety of students with a shared passion for both reading and writing.
The club serves as an outlet for various students to read, write, and share their pieces of work with their peers. Ms. Domenic, the club’s advisor, describes it as “almost completely student led,” being pioneered by junior Abby Ryan.
Ryan found her love of both reading and writing at a very young age, being extremely inspired by author Suzanne Collins in her youth. She expanded on this, saying, “I love all of Suzanne Collins' books. My favorite is the final book in the Overlander series. The main character feels so real. The conflicts, despite taking place in a fantasy world, reflect our world deeply. It doesn't have a happily-ever-after ending. But it makes it feel that much more real.”
Ryan had always known she wanted to pioneer a club, saying, “I knew I wanted to start a club during high school. But I wasn’t sure what it should be. I took Creative Writing sophomore year and was sad when the class was over. So I asked Ms. Domenic if she would be willing to be the advisor for a creative writing club.”
Domenic commented, sharing that Ryan “totally spearheaded the club,” and saying, “Abby has just been so pumped and excited running this club, she’s kept it super well organized. In this club, students gain a sense of community and understanding of fellow writers, it’s amazing.” Ryan shared this sentiment, saying, “My favorite part of the club is how supportive everyone is. Everyone supports each other's writing endeavors and lifts each other up.”
Club members, Bridget O’Leary and Luna Urbina De Jesus, shared similar sentiments, both agreeing that the club’s environment is extremely supportive. O’Leary shared, “Creative writing club is just a space for everyone to express their creative side, it’s been nice being around people with a shared love for writing.” Urbina De Jesus added, saying, “Just being apart of something where everyone is so supportive, it’s been so nice. I love the club.”
Though the Creative Writing Club is still relatively new to MBHS, they still have some extremely exciting projects coming up. The club is working on a magazine currently that will feature Morro Bay High student writing. Ryan shared that this, “isn’t going to be the last time the club does such a thing,” so if you are at all interested in being involved, head over to Ms. Domenic’s room next Monday, and explore your creativity, one meeting at a time.
