Junior Alana Shields has been a captain on the MBHS volleyball team since her sophomore year. She has also been on varsity since her freshman year alongside her friends, juniors Lucy Duprey and Reese Kelly. Shields started her volleyball journey when she was 7 years old. Her family enjoys volleyball very much, her mom, grandpa, and aunt played, so she was surrounded by volleyball throughout her life.

“High school volleyball has not always been my favorite…I have always looked forward to club season,” said Shields.

Shields has had issues with former coaches, so that ruined a lot of the fun on the team. The former coaches didn’t create the healthiest and most supportive environment. When Sheebs and Dustin came in mid-season Shields began to enjoy the team more.

Not only does Shields play school volleyball, but she also joined club volleyball in 2020 when she was 11 years old. She currently plays for Flight Academy’s club volleyball. For the past three years, she has been traveling around with her club. Her coaches are very supportive towards her in numerous ways and she is very grateful for them. Her friends who are also on the team have supported her as well.

“I think that is the main reason I love volleyball so much, the bonds I create with my friends through this sport is unmatchable,” said Shields.

“The bonds I create with my friends through this sport is unmatchable. I have grown so much closer to people I used to just walk past in the hallways or never know before from other schools,” said Shields. She has a great passion for the sport, but she appreciates everything else the sport has to offer. Shields enjoys both of the teams she is a part of and is forever grateful for them.

These friendships and bonds remind her of why she loves this sport so much. Shields feels a different level of confidence on the court - a confidence that only volleyball could gift her with.

Shields is prepared for her senior year, to be a captain for her third and final year. She feels sentimental about next year being her final year playing with her friends, Especially Duprey, who has been her go-to girl in volleyball. Shields' goal for both club and high school is to play the best she can and have the best seasons.
