Jump Into the Boys Swim and Dive Teams
Boys Swim has had two meets so far; one against Arroyo Grande High School two weeks ago, and another against Mission Preparatory High School a week ago. Unfortunately, Arroyo Grande defeated them, but they were successful in getting a win against Mission Preparatory High School by placing first.
“We lost by a lot, but that's because Arroyo Grande’s swim team is entirely made up of club swimmers. We only have two club swimmers, Jude Moore and Edward Lu,” said junior Alex Roberts.
Even though they came short against Arroyo Grande High School, the team is made up of a lot of strong swimmers. Most of the swimmers are previous water polo players, making them pretty well conditioned athletes. For their 50 meter free, the team's times are really solid. A good 50 meter is 20 seconds, two laps and back. Right now each swimmer ranges from mid to high 24 seconds. One thing the swimmers are working on is their speed. A key thing they work on during practice is their flip turns, and or dives. If they aren’t able to have steady flip turns/dives it makes it difficult for them to regain their momentum and motion once they hit the water. Regardless of good technique, it’s really based on the flip turns. So the boys throughout this week have worked hard on them during practices before they have their next meet.
“I want to try to break a 54 second 100 meter free and then I wanna try and break a 50 meter for a 23 or 22 second,” said Roberts.
The team and swimmers have big goals this season, to improve as a team, but also individually. The team plans to work on their relay starts before their dual meet against Paso and Templeton on Friday at 3 p.m.
“When it comes to the team as a whole, we really do try to get the job done. It gets pretty competitive around some schools because a lot of other schools are good at diving, but we also have our fair share of good competitors too,” said senior Jeremiah Cordero.
At practice, the divers consistently work on their six main dives, front dive, back dive, frontflip, backflip, pike dive, and a twist. These athletes work hard to master and critique each dive so they can have an excellent season. Go pirates!
