Wrestling, both boys and girls, is the fastest growing high school sport in the US, increasing by roughly 46% between 2022-2023, and our girls team is no different. Morro Bay High School’s girls wrestling season started in late October, and is coming to an end in February. The team travels across the state to duals and tournaments weekly, most of the time traveling hours on end. The wrestling team has been preparing for the official season all year round, conditioning frequently with various exercises.

Their season kicked off with the Ranger Shootout tournament, at Redwood High School, where our school had four girls place first through third in their respective weight classes. As for CIT, MBHS hosted the girl’s tournament on the 6th of January, hosting roughly 25 schools. Ayten Elbarbary, the only senior on the team, placed first in her weight class, an outstanding achievement. Multiple other girls placed within the top 10 of their weight classes as well.

One of the team’s most notable tournaments has been the Rodeo Invitational,  which was hosted by Clovis East High School. This tournament took place in mid-December. “Pretty much all of our girls placed,” says Abby Tuller, a sophomore on the team. During that tournament, Chelsea Catalan, a junior, placed first in her weight class.

Overall, the girl’s wrestling team has had a great season. With just 10-12 girls, they have managed to have multiple competitors place at almost every tournament. Despite the small number of players, in their most recent tournament, our team was able to place 10th out of 40 total schools. Two of our girls placed fourth, and two placed third in their respective weight classes. “There’s a lot of improvement that’s been happening through the post season and off season,” states Abby Tuller. The girl’s team will only improve as the players get more and more experience in the sport, even though the team is made up of lots of already skilled players.
