February 28. 2025

MBHS swim and dive season has officially started. The first swim practice and tryout was Monday, Feb. 3, while dive practices started on Monday, Feb. 17. The girls and boys both practice at the same time. Dive season is also happening during swim, and so the swimmers get to leave swim practice around 4:15 p.m. to head off to dive. There are many freshmen starting to swim and dive for the first time which can be pretty hard and scary for some.  It is a whole other level of commitment for many.

The dive coach for JV and varsity is Shayna who dives for Cal Poly. Dive competitions have not started yet, and In order to compete players must have six dives. The dive practices last about an hour and for the first 30 minutes they stretch and do an ab workout. Stretching is really important before diving and all of the divers and the coach take it very seriously, otherwise they could get seriously injured. Then the divers head over to the diving board to start with some simple dives. Caelen Josey, a sophomore on varsity said, “ I have been really looking forward to this season starting and it is super cool to see so many new people joining dive.” Diving is really for anyone and Gayer said “Everybody is welcome to come and tryout for dive.”

The varsity swim girls had their first meet this Saturday, Feb. 22, up in Portersville. There were only 12 girls who got invited to the meet, there were three freshman girls who got to go to their first meet this weekend. For the 200 yard relay Kirra Dogherty, Tessa Standridge, Cadence Watts and Amara SF competed together and got a time of 2:20.25. They ended up placing seventh overall for the 200 yard relay. Sofia Panian, a freshman on varsity at MBHS said, “I was really nervous to see the dynamic of what a swim meet was like but overall I had fun.” The varsity swim girls said that they really enjoy how everybody is so supportive when it comes to swimming and how everybody cheers you on no matter what and will never let you feel defeated.

Overall, the season has started off well and everybody is super excited about what is to come. The varsity swim girls had so much fun this weekend and enjoyed their time in Portersville. Both the swim and dive coaches mentioned how they are thrilled to see how the teams get stronger and grow better connections.
