The Misconceptions About Stunt Cheer

Stunt cheer is a sport that is often misconceived as the same thing as regular cheerleading. Often thought of as just like the movie Bring It On, stunt cheer is nothing like the movies. Stunt cheer is much more technical and condition based then regular cheerleading is. In stunt cheer there are no dance moves or pom-poms.

In stunt cheer, every person has a role to fulfill on the team. There are bases, flyers, and tumblers. Each role involves a lot of skill. Flyers have to have impeccable balance and tumblers have to exhibit perfect form. The bases are often overlooked, but they  play a crucial role on the team. Isa Rojas, last year's co-captain says, “I’m actually going to physical therapy to help me better myself in the sport.” She has been involved in stunt since she was in fourth grade, which has resulted in an injury in her wrist. Being a base for such a long time has strained her wrist. She stresses the amount of skill that it takes to be on the team, and how frequently that is forgotten by people.

The Morro Bay High’s stunt cheer team has been fairly small every year, but that means that the team is very close knit. There is a lot of familiarity among the team because the team is often built up of people who were on the cheer team in the fall. One year, the team was only five people, who were competing against other teams in the county.

In a stunt game there are four quarters, the first being partner stunts, the second being pyramids, the third quarter is jumps and tumbling, and the fourth ends with a large routine with all of it. There are usually eight competitions per season for stunt cheer.

So far, this season's practice has been going very well. There are a lot of new freshman to the team, which means a lot of people to train. This year the team has a promising new coach, who will surely lead the team to success. The actual stunt season starts in February. This year there are two home stunt cheer competitions, so be sure to check out how impressive our stunt cheer team is, and understand how the sport works.
