The Sandy Sport of MBHS
Beach volleyball, although it has the word volleyball in it, has many differences when compared to the indoor sport. The main difference is how many players and each season each sport is played and beach volleyball is a spring sport. The indoor volleyball program has been an established sport at Morro Bay High School for years, but only recently did the beach volleyball program come to be. At the end of the pandemic in 2022, the first beach volleyball team was created. Games were hosted at Pismo Beach and Cal Poly until this year.
The Girls Beach Volleyball Team at Morro Bay High School is coached by Kate Yarborough and Duane Cross, who both also coached the varsity and frosh teams of indoor volleyball. They hold practice every weekday except Friday at the private courts on campus, after the storms in recent years destroyed the Pismo courts where games were originally held. This has made this 2024 season great for Morro Bay fans with the majority of the games hosted at the high school’s 3 courts. So far the team has played Righetti, Paso, SLOCA, Nipomo, and Mission High School, all at home, two being preseason scrimmages and the rest league games. The MBHS volleyball team has a standing record of 1-2 now in league.
One of their most recent games was against Righetti High School on March 11 at home, a well matched team that fought hard, though Morro Bay Varsity won 2-1 and JV 2-0, giving Morro Bay the overall win! The winning pairs on varsity were sophomore Ava Amese and freshman Ella Mehan, and sophomore Jane Taylor and sophomore Marley Soccaras.
Beach volleyball has only just recently become a CIF sport at Morro Bay High School, and it will continue to grow and become more popular as all players become more advanced with every new touch on the ball. The beach volleyball team does not have any games over spring break, so make sure to come on out to their next home game on April 17 against St. Joes High School.
