Water Polo - The Hardest Sport in the World?
by Jula Arnold
October 25, 2024Water polo has evolved into the toughest sport in the world because in the process of treading, swimming, and throwing, all of the major muscle groups have to work. When it comes to what happens under the water, anything goes, which means punching, kicking and scratching are part of every polo game. Players are not allowed to hold onto any side walls or touch the bottom of the pool, they get depending on how many extra players, little to no rest.
However, this does not deter people from playing this sport. Because water polo is a popular sport at MBHS a lot of girls and boys like to play in their free time. But some in our school don’t even know the rules. There are six “field” players and one goalie. The official playing field is at least 25 yards long, 20 yards wide and seven feet deep. During the game, players must pass, catch, and shoot with only one hand. If players take the ball under water when guarded they have to turnover. Because players are not allowed to stand or touch the bottom of the pool or hang on the wall the sport is really hard for the players.
Girls varsity water polo made it into third in the league and are ranked 28 in California. Their last home game was against Presentation on Thursday, Oct. 3.
Girls Water polo won their game on Saturday October 5, against Tulare Western with a final score of 11-1. The team leader Ava Beckett, who is a senior, scored a total of 29 goals so far. Thursday, Oct. 10, 2024, the Morro Bay varsity girl’s water polo team won again against Atascadero High School by a score of 11-9.
