On Wednesday, Nov. 13, Whoopi Goldberg celebrated her 69th birthday on “The View.” She came prepared with presents for the audience and an exciting announcement. The ABC host had officially launched a brand new TV network, “devoted entirely to women’s sports.”

Goldberg introduced the concept, saying, “Next is something that has been 16 years in the making, that I am proud to announce. We are launching today a women’s sports channel called AWSN. It’s the All Women’s Sports Network.”

During a recent appearance on NBC’s The Tonight Show, Goldberg revealed that the idea to launch the AWSN “came” to her 16 years ago, telling host Jimmy Fallon that she’s always been “pissed off” by girls being dismissed as athletes essentially since childhood. She said, “Ever since I was a little kid, I always wanted to play sports. My brother could play. He played baseball, he played softball, he played basketball, he played everything. And they would say, ‘Oh, hi little girl.’ It always pissed me off. So, for years, I’ve been talking to people and saying, ‘Wouldn’t it be great if we could go around the world, start getting young athletes in high school so that we can grow with them and grow up with them?’”

Goldberg expanded on the network, saying, “The channel will also promote women’s health and wellness with the help of our partner CommonSpirit Health, who really looks after women in particular.” According to Goldberg, the channel will be available globally, and is available in the US now through VIZIO WatchFree+.

The network has, as of Nov. 13, launched internationally, with plans of continuing to expand.
