Doechii Wins Her First Grammy
Feb. 2 was the night of the 66th Grammys; a night where the world tuned in to hear who gets to go home with a gold record player reward. The Grammys have gone through many changes over the decades with new categories and historic wins. In 1989, a new category was announced, “Best Rap Album.” Eight years later, Lauryn Hill became the first woman to ever win in the category, and it wasn’t until 2019 that Cardi B became the second woman to win in the category. This year’s Grammys introduced the third woman to win, Doechii.
As Doechii arose tearfully onto the stage to receive her award, the room was full of claps and cheers for the 26 year old. Through joyful tears, she started her speech with, “This category was introduced in 1989, and two women have won-” then said, “THREE women have won! Lauryn Hill, Cardi B and Doechii.” History had been made, and it was a grand moment of reflection on Doechii’s hard work and the journey of her career. Five years prior, the Grammy winner was fired from her job amid the pandemic. Recently, a video resurfaced of her talking about being fired and how she was planning to go from studio to studio to look for a job. Doechii’s dedication and talent paved the way for her to receive her deserving Grammy award.
Doechii started making music and writing poetry in 2014 while still in high school. Two years later, in 2016, she released her first song, “Girls,” on Soundcloud under the name, Iamdoechii. In 2020, she proceeded to release her own self funded mixtape titled, “Oh The Places You Go,” which caught the attention of many new fans and record labels.
In 2021 her single “Yucky Blucky Fruitcake” went viral on platforms like TikTok, and in March 2022, she was signed to Top Dawg Entertainment and Capitol Records. From there, she released EPs, had a few songs go viral on social media, and went on to collaborate with other artists like Tyler, The Creator, on his latest album, “Chromokopia,” released in Oct. 2024. These different outlets allowed Doechii to creatively express herself and her dedication in music, and in return she built a passionate following that appreciates both her and her music.
In Aug. 2024, Doechii released, “Alligator Bites Never Heal” her third album ever released. The album consisted of 19 songs, with instant hits like, “DENIAL IS A RIVER” and “NISSAN ALTIMA” which captivated the rap world by storm. It is not hard to hear how this album awarded her the Grammy she deserves, having worked in the industry for years she is able to introduce her own style and lyrics to the music world in a way that leaves her mark on the industry. Being the third woman to ever win in the “Best Rap Album” category, she is able to inspire other young girls and women who someday hope to pursue a career in the music industry and follow Doechii’s footsteps. This certainly won't be the last we hear of her and there is no doubt there is still so much greatness to come and a legacy to be remembered by Doechii.
