With the passing of time, things are bound to change - the weather, the amount of daylight experienced, and of course, Fortnite seasons. With Chapter 2 ReMix concluding with a live concert, Fortnite Chapter 6, Season 1 began on Dec. 1st. The end of season concert featured the likes of Snoop Dogg, Eminem, Ice Spice, and a posthumous performance by Juice Wrld. The season change transported players to a new map and brought forth major gameplay changes.

The brand new battle royale island is ripe with locations including a hefty 18 named locations such as “Canyon Crossing” and “Seaport City.” The map is filled with designs that are heavily inspired by both ancient and modern Japanese architecture that provide for a much needed change from the bland design present in Chapter 5. These locations not only provide for a pleasant visual experience, but they also implement an increased flow with the newly added movement mechanics.

A location that seems to diverge from the Japanese inspiration is a gas station named, “Burd.” The manner in which the mascot for the gas station is presented seems to be largely replicating that of the real life gas station chain “Buc-ee’s.” The humor focused point of interest (which is becoming a fan favorite) seems to be largely reminiscent of past mascot-centered locations such as “Butter Barn” and “Tomato Town.”

Along with the new map, other changes have come to Fortnite as a whole. A new added item type, “The Oni Mask,” which gives the player access to either fire or teleportation abilities. “The Oni Mask” is not the only change to the gameplay loop, as new creatures known as Sprites have been added to the game. The Sprites can provide either mobility or healing-help to the player when they are placed on the ground. But, the player can also take the Sprites to a Sprite Shrine and deposit them. When the Sprites are deposited they give the player high level loot as well as Boons which provide for passive buffs such as increased movement speed when holding a pickaxe.

With the new season, there also comes a new Battle Pass to purchase. The price of the Battle Pass for the first time ever has increased, now requiring 1,000 v-bucks instead of the usual 950. The Battle Pass includes a multitude of original characters inspired by Japanese mythology as well as Godzilla and Baymax from Disney’s “Big Hero Six.” The inclusion of Baymax coincides with the increase of Disney characters being added to the game after Disney  invested over $1.5 billion into Epic Games, the company behind Fortnite.

Overall, the new season provides for a much needed shake up after the bland gameplay loop of Chapter 5. The new map provided for a lush and diverse environment to explore that includes locations that always seemed to be populated by others with no sections of the map ignored. The new season may be overlooked soon with the inclusion of a permanent OG mode that will take players back to 2017.
