On May 5 2025, MBHS Anatomy students took a trip to AT Still University in Santa Maria. The students of Mrs. Frere’s Anatomy and Physiology class were fortunate enough to learn all about what it is like to be a physician’s assistant. Those on the field trip were able to meet with current students as well in order to learn all it takes in order to be a student learning to be a physician's assistant at AT Still University.
The visit was filled with various hands-on activities that allowed students to take their turn at the many responsibilities held by a physician’s assistant. Junior Alana Shields shared about an activity in which students were taught about a practice done by dental assistants in order to check the healthiness of one’s teeth. “They gave us a blue pill that we were supposed to chew. And after you chewed the pill you could tell if your teeth were healthy if they became blue. So for the next little bit a bunch of us were walking around with blue teeth,” said Shields.
On the trip, students were also taught various medical practices that ensure no cross contamination ensues when performing medical procedures. One procedure students were taught was a medical grade way in which to properly wash one’s hands in order to confirm their cleanliness. Junior Joss Finch said, “We were taught how to wash our hands. But, in a very particular medical way that surgeons wash them. It was really nice because it made my hands super soft afterwards.”
This year was the first time in which students of Mrs. Frere’s class have ever gone on this field trip. Typically in years past, students would go on a field trip to Cal Poly in order to learn more about human anatomy by viewing a human cadaver. Unfortunately, to the joy of some and the dismay of others, the Cal Poly field trip had to be cancelled this year. However, many students found this field trip to be a welcome substitute.
