11:59
By John Holguin
May 8, 202411:59 was created by filmmaker Ben Cervantes and will be one of the films featured at the film fest at the Morro Bay Theater on May 13th. The film is about a nameless student who procrastinates on an assignment and tries to find various ways to avoid doing the assignment. The film is short but can speak for many high school students who procrastinate on assignments because of stress and quick due dates. When interviewing Ben Cervantes about what inspired him to make this film, he responded, "I think the topic resonates with a lot of students and that assignments like this put stress on them when they should have just done the assignment in the first place.” This response by Ben was a good mark on how many students procrastinate on assignments.
The filming process of 11:59 took place in the familiar town of Morro Bay California, in the room of our nameless character. Ben, who plays the main actor, was also the editor for the film. The process of filming, editing and turning it in took four days. The story as a whole is four minutes long but it still is very interesting and intriguing. “I put a lot of work and thinking into this film and I hope the idea of it will encourage people not to procrastinate on assignments,” said Ben. The idea for the story came from Ben when he procrastinated on an assignment and thought that it would be a great idea for a film for Film Fest. 11:59 is in the miscellaneous category for the Film Fest which is a good fit for the short student made film.
Ben also relates to the film on a personal level. He says, “I have procrastinated many times on different assignments and have found myself in the same situation as my character in the film, which is also another inspiration I had for making this film.” The film will have a strong connection with those who watch it and relate to the story . The film may be short, but its meaning can go much deeper than just another boring short film with little to show. 11:59 has a meaning to it and is a lesson to everyone watching it. The message? Ben says, “find what's the most important, have your priorities straight.”
