A Night of Sensations: The 2024 VMA Awards

Each fall, MTV holds the annual VMA music awards. Some of the biggest artists in current mainstream music are in attendance, and millions tune in every year to watch the performances and see who will take home a moon man award that night. This year, the VMAs were held on Wednesday, Sept 11 at the UBS Arena in Elmort, New York.

Some of the attendees to grace the iconic black carpet were, Taylor Swift, LISA, Chappel Roan, Anitta and latest pop sensation, Sabrina Carpenter. The night was filled with excitement and anticipation, and with this year being huge for the music world, everyone had the big questions in mind, “Who will win song of the summer?” and “Who will win best new artist?”

The performances of the night were just as head turning with big names like Katy Perry performing to Megan Thee Stallion, who was also hosting the night. Perry performed an arrangement of old songs and new songs to celebrate her award of, “The Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award,” which is the third year the award has been offered.

When Swift went on stage to accept her “Best Collaboration” award, with Malone, she took a moment to speak on 9/11. “Guys, I wanted to say, waking up this morning in New York on September 11th… Everyone who lost a loved one and everyone that we lost, that is the most important thing about today - and that everything that happens tonight falls behind that,” Swift said on stage alongside Malone.

The nominations had everyone at the edge of their seats, with Swift taking the lead from all other artists with twelve nominations, and she ended up leaving that night with seven moon men, including “Artist of the year,” and “Song of the Summer,” with Post Malone. Right behind her was Eminem with eight nominations and went home that night with two awards. Some of the other huge awards like, “Best New Artist,” was won by Chappell Roan and “Song of the Year,” going to Sabrina Carpenter for her hit song “Espresso.”

Roan made headlines on the carpet, not only for her extravagant yet simple look, but also for her instinctive reaction on the carpet against an out of line paparazzi. She had a natural reaction to an unfair situation in which many celebrities are afraid to, due to the fear of how their fan base will react. However, Roan’s fanbase is centered around being true to yourself and many fans even praised her for choosing to not stay quiet in her situation. Roan then went on later in the night to perform her hit single, “Good Luck, Babe,” on stage with fire behind her, elaborate dancers, and her breathtaking vocal abilities and stage presence.
