Golf is for Fun(draising)

Looking out from the top of the golf course amongst the bright, clear sky it was apparent that the weather was imitating the future. The bright, clear future of those who would be impacted by the funds raised for the MBHS Golf Team Scholarship. The day served as a way for the community to give back to the new generation of those who equally enjoy the game that they love.

Over 70 community members participated in the tournament in order to help grow scholarship funds for graduating seniors that take part in the school’s golf program. Morro Bay Golf Club President Bill Luffee said that during the eight years of the scholarship fund existing, “We probably have awarded close to fifty-thousand dollars in scholarships to both the men’s and women’s teams.” This money has been put to great use by its recipients including recent graduate Talon Hawk who is now attending his first year of college at Saint Xavier’s in Chicago as well as playing on the school’s golf team.

During the fundraiser, there were also multiple opportunities for community members to earn some money as well. One of these opportunities was the “closest to the pin” challenge on hole ten hosted by both of the school’s golf teams. The goal of the challenge was to see who could ultimately hit their ball closest to the hole. The winner, golf enthusiast Curtis Johnson, had a proximity of three feet and three inches to the hole and won 100 dollars, a night’s stay at the Hampton Inn in Morro Bay, a sleeve of titleist golf balls, and a slew of MBHS gear.

Another opportunity was a 50-50 raffle in which the winner would be the proud owner of half the money that was spent on tickets with the other half going to the scholarship fund. Local golf store owner and MBHS supporter George Dodge was the lucky winner of the raffle. However, the golf teams were the true winners as Dodge graciously did not claim the money for himself and instead gave the full amount to the scholarship fund.

The tournament acts as a great opportunity to not only raise money for the seniors graduating from the golf program, but also a great way to create connections with the community. Senior Jonas Smith said, “It was really great being able to talk to a lot of those who are awesome enough to come out and spend time helping us out. A bunch of them seem to just enjoy seeing us out here and sharing that common interest and enjoyment of golf.”

The day was an immense success for both of the teams. The next step in the scholarship process is for the golfing seniors of Morro Bay to make it to the end of the year and see who will be bestowed with this amazing scholarship. The golf teams would like to extend special thanks to Tammy Doshier, Joel Clay, and Bill Luffee for putting together and hosting this event.
