May 1, 2025Tesla sales have declined within the last five years, and stocks are unreliable as people are unable to trust CEO Elon Musk because of his “messy takeover of Twitter and increasingly controversial political rants on the platform - now called X - have alienated some former fans,” said in the article “Tesla’s Reputation Slumps”, written by Joann Muller. And with the latest Tesla Model 3 released in Jan. 10, 2024, the sales have declined compared to when the first Model 3 released in 2019, with 365,000 sales in 2019 and 325,000 sales in 2024. Even due to the loss of sales, Musk is hoping that the new AI powered vehicle will bring Tesla out of the dumps.
Musk is struggling to support his reputation of his brand and is responding very positively to criticisms about Tesla. “Whether you hate me, like me or are indifferent, do you want the best car, or do you not want the best car?” Musk stated at a publicity event. Even due to the controversial topics surrounding Tesla, frequent buyers are still going back to purchase the latest model. Even climate activist Kat Beyer wanted to avoid Musk at all costs, but when she was unable to find a reliable electric vehicle, she purchased the Model Y. “It’s hard to drive the car associated with him,” Beyer said, “but I can’t go back to gas.”
Tesla owners are in a situation where they enjoy driving the car but, “Every time I drive it, I feel like a rolling billboard for a man dismantling our government and hurting people,” said Senator Mark Kelly, and pushed him to buy a Chevrolet Tahoe. Owners’ cars are getting vandalized and set on fire due to Musk’s reputation: “I mean, Tesla’s a peaceful company that has made great cars, great products - that’s all it’s done,” Musk said when he heard about the vandalism. Many people believe that there are controversial topics surrounding Musk and Tesla, while some believe he is bettering the earth, even though he supports bad ideas and others think that we would be better off without him, Musk is still producing more Teslas and ignoring the backlash.
