Ava Schmidt
For freshman Ava Schmidt, success means getting good grades and having a happy life. This is represented by her commitment to her family and friends, and of course, school. Everyone, including Schmidt herself, describes her as, “Kind, smart, and shy,” freshman Lucy Haydu said.
Schmidt just arrived at MBHS, but she is already making a positive effect on this school, whether it’s by representing us on the varsity tennis team, or challenging herself in as many difficult classes as she can. Many would be overwhelmed by this heavy workload, but Schmidt is used to the pressure. Some of her techniques for stress management are to prioritize what is most important, and by talking to her for even a minute, you can tell that one of those things for Schmidt is the relationships that are most trustworthy for her. When asked what would be a ‘perfect day’ to her, Schmidt said, “Spending time with friends and family at the beach… and shopping.”
One of her biggest role models is her cousin, who just graduated from high school. According to Schmidt, her cousin’s sweetness and intelligence has been a constant influence on her for as long as she can remember. This, as well as making the people she cares about and herself proud, are some of Schmidt’s biggest motivators for her to continue to succeed in school and sports.
Almost as important as success is to Schmidt, tennis is a significant part of her life; she said that this is because tennis “can be an individual sport if you choose, but it’s also a team sport if you lift up your teammates, whether you play doubles or singles.” This passion for accomplishment consistently drives her to not only win, but make varsity her freshman year.
“My biggest flaw is being too judgmental on myself or procrastinating when there are assignments that I need to do,” Schmidt said, but she has also found that there are things that can help when the work is too much or she needs some comfort. For example, Schmidt said that when upset, something that brings her relief is her dog, who she has shared her favorite memories with, along with her friends and family.
Although many would struggle to find the time, energy, and willpower to have such a full life, Schmidt continues to achieve lots of accomplishments whether it’s in class, on the court, and even outside of school and sports.
