If you were to ask any kid at MBHS who they should turn to when it comes to music at our school, Brynn Belyea would be the first name to come to mind. Belyea has been teaching at MBHS for over 20 years and has become a staple to MBHS staff. Before the 2023-2024 school year, Belyea had also been teaching the Los Osos Middle School band at the same time as teaching here at MBHS. He works hard to bring unique and amazing experiences to his students, like bringing composers to work on their pieces with students, or four day long trips all the way in Lake Tahoe.
Belyea grew up far from the sometimes sunny Central Coast of California. He grew up in New Hampshire, a small state on the east side of the country. When asked about how he first got involved with music in his life, “In 5th grade, my parents rented a saxophone,” Belyea said, “That’s when I started in the beginning band and really got into it y'know. I was really lucky when I was in high school to play in a group that was kind of an honor group.” From there, Belyea went on to continue band throughout middle school and high school, until eventually further pursuing music and going to school for music and got a teaching credential.
No one can help but wonder what the drive behind such a long yet passionate career associated with music. “What’s cool about music is that everybody’s music moves each individual person differently,” Belyea said. “For me it’s sometimes calming, sometimes therapeutic and it’s sometimes exciting. It’s something that’s in everyone's soul.”
Belyea has been a shining light in the music department here at MBHS. He has guided kids and encouraged them to work hard everyday. He brings an enjoyable approach to music and helps students understand the aspects of music that may be more difficult to comprehend. In his music production class here on campus, while there may be under 10 students, he does not shy away from giving his all. He gives kids both the space they need to work and is attentive to help anyone who may have questions.
