Morro Bay High School recently had an annual tournament hosting over 900 wrestlers representing 94 different schools. The tussling talents converge as schools from as far as Fresno and Palo Alto make their mark on the mat. In an exclusive interview with Coach Paul Mirmingos of Justin Garza High School, anticipation runs high. When asked if they are excited about their upcoming wrestling match, he responded, “currently, we are waiting for our next wrestling match, but we are looking forward to it. It’s going to be fun seeing what I’ve prepared my students for in this moment.”

As the tournament began, the objectives of Coach Mirmingos’ team came into focus. I asked if there was anything that he wanted to get out of attending this tournament and he exclaimed, “we are looking to get the best experience from other wrestling schools on the central coast.” The essence of friendship, teamwork, and skill exchange appear as the driving force for Justin Garza High School’s mission.

Diving into Coach Mirmingos’ coaching journey, he highlights the dedication of standout wrestlers Francisco Ortiz and Jacob Venegas. “They have worked very hard and have been wrestling since they were young. I believe that they will stand out because they have practiced hard up until this moment. They have worked very hard this season, and I’m excited to see what they have to offer for us,” Coach Mirmingos reflects, acknowledging the exceptional commitment of his athletes.

Shifting the spotlight to Selma High School, I interviewed coach and parent, Jose Mendoza for insights into their aspirations for the tournament. With unwavering determination, the wrestlers assert, “win it; it’s all we do. Well, some of the time.” The pursuit of victory stands as the primary goal for Selma High School’s wrestling squad.

Mendoza sheds light on the collective effort propelling the team forward, stating, “it’s all a team effort. Everybody is trying to help them get ready for that.” The tournament serves not only as a battleground for power but also as a crucial stepping stone in the preparation for higher-level competitions. As the wrestling community converges, the stage is set for an excellent display of the skills and strategies of these aspiring athletes.
