Girls Beach Volleyball Starts Their Season

February 28, 2025The first couple weeks of beach volleyball started off with a lot of rain, causing the first couple days of practice to be cancelled. The team was able to practice in the gym, but practices still weren’t the same, with the first match being only a week after tryouts began. The team is made up of mostly new freshmen, with most of them previously playing indoor volleyball last season. However, the rest of the team was made up of returning players of all grades.
The practices consisted of conditioning and occasionally walking to the beach. Players come to practice every day from 3:45 pm to 5:45 pm, but on Fridays, players come to practice only from 3:45 pm to 4:45 pm. “I enjoy practices because it is very different from indoor [volleyball] and players are able to be more involved with the team as there are only two players on a court,” said freshman Ruby Boggs. In beach volleyball, the coaches take 18 players to away games, with six starting teams and three practice teams.
The first match took place on Feb. 19 at the Cal Poly SLO courts, and the players traveled by van to get to and from the match. “I think that we should have gotten more practice because of all the rain, but I think that we will do well against Mission Prep.” said freshman Nora Wilson, who is on the practice team. The players only had about a full 12 days of practice, as some of them were indoors in the gym due to the rain.
Unfortunately, the teams left the match with a losing score of 3-0 against the Royals. But, even though the team lost, they are very eager to be playing and all of the players are very enthusiastic about going to practice and going to matches. Many also look forward to the team bonding that happens during the van rides to and from matches.
