Girls JV Tennis Triumphs Over Nipomo
On the sunny afternoon of Sept 10, the MBHS JV tennis team played against the Nipomo JV tennis team at home, winning with a total score of 5-4. The team won five singles, securing them the win over Nipomo. Losing the two previous games, this was an important win for Morro Bay, giving the players hope for a good season.
The match started with the doubles, Morro Bay losing all of them, giving them little of a hope to win the total match. With a score of 0-8, juniors Sahara Burrow and Christina Naguit lost the first double, followed by another loss of 0-8 for freshmen Kaylee Tackett and Ayla Hurt-Jarrt. The team had watched intensely as the third double started to become a real tight game. Scoring a 7:7, juniors Maria Nararette and Hannah Fleischer turned the double into a real challenge for the opposing team. The Nipomo girls won the last two points, winning the third double in total.
Morro Bay had more luck with their singles, winning a total five out of six. It started with junior Jula Arnold’s single, who has a winning streak this season having not lost any of her five matches.” The game started 1-0 for her [ opponent],I knew I had to concentrate now,” Arnold said while recalling the match. ”In the beginning it was really tight, playing. 1-0. 1-1, 1-2, 2-2, which worried me a little.” But after playing for 15 minutes, the junior started improving, scoring one point after the other. She was able to win her match, winning her first set with a score of 6-2 and her second with 6-0, starting a winning streak for the singles.
Our blue and white team also won the second and third single. Senior Ella Bettencourt won her match 6-0 and 6-4, seeing no real challenge in her opponent and winning one point after the other.
A little less luck on the fourth single, junior Acacia Mayo lost both of the sets 0-6, ending the winning streak for the pirates. Picking it up again, Junior Naguit won the fifth single by winning a match tie break. In the end Venessa Salgado delivered a tight sixth game. She won 7-5 and 6-8, securing the total triumph over Nipomo High's JV tennis team.
This game starts a new era, giving the players hope for a good season and more wins to come. But in the end, what really matters is that the girls have fun while playing, no matter if they lose or win.
