Laura Kamelski

Junior Laura Kamelski is an exchange student from Germany, who is spending a semester here at Morro Bay High School. Her hometown is a city called Baden-Baden which is not a town quite similar to Morro Bay. One of her main reasons to be an exchange student was to improve her English and make new experiences in a different country.

Kamelski likes traveling and has been to a lot of places, but her favorite destination so far was Dubai in Arab. Kamelski noticed there were a lot of differences between her home country Germany and the U.S. Above all, the school is most different because in Germany you can’t choose your subjects until you’re in 11th grade. Additionally, most of the subjects MBHS offers, don’t exist in Germany, like anatomy, ceramics and journalism. Her favorite subject in Germany was PE. In addition, she noticed that the people here are more open as opposed to Germans.

In her free time Kamelski likes to play piano, do sports, especially tennis, and spend time with family and friends. Her host family consists of one younger host brother, one younger host sister, and her two host parents. So far she’s spent a lot of time with her host family in the area exploring where she will live for the next few months. During that time she realized that she will mostly miss the people from her home country, especially her family and friends.

Kamelski thinks that her friends made her who she is today. She said, “I believe that my friends are the ones I can trust the most and I know that they will always support me.” That’s why Kamelski misses her friends a lot and is scared of losing them over the time she is here. But on the other hand, she is happy to make new friends during her time here.

When asked what she’s most excited about in the U.S., Kamelski said “I’m most excited to see how much I can grow here as a person.”
