MBHS Girls Waterpolo Team Awaits Their Trip to Greece
This summer, the girls water polo team at MBHS will travel to Greece to practice in the turquoise ocean and experience the sport in another country. The team will fly out to Athens, Greece from the Los Angeles Airport on July 20. The girls are extremely excited and enthusiastic about the trip, ready to improve their game and explore the country so rich in history and arts. Greece is expected to be a wonderful and educational experience for the team, coaches, and chaperones.
The waterpolo team has been fundraising for this trip since last year, they have already raised a good amount of money and only need a couple thousand more to afford the trip. Unfortunately, due to the importance of buying the plane tickets early and the lack of money in the beginning of the year, the water polo coach had to pay for the travel tickets himself.
However, the fundraisers they’ve been doing have each earned about $2,000 on average, making them ahead of their goal and on the road to success. They are close to reaching enough to pay the coach back and make extra on top of that. “The fundraisers have been kind of stressful to organize but honestly they’re a lot of fun and I’m glad I get to do it with my team,” said freshman Poe Geever. The events they have held to generate funds have ranged from selling banners and hosting garage sales to showing “Mamma Mia" in the theater. Not only have these fundraisers solicited many contributions and donations, they have also been good team bonding exercises, helping the team create connections and strong friendships with each other.
In Greece, the team will be doing somewhat of a training camp, and they will be practicing with other European water polo teams. The girls will wake up, train, eat, then play a series of games and scrimmages. After that, they are free to explore Greece and take specialized classes to understand the customs and traditions of the country they’re visiting. They can take classes like Greek folk dancing or cooking classes to learn how to make staple Greek food. “I am excited to get to learn about the Greek culture through cooking and I’m really excited to bond with my teammates,” said freshman Willow Andreano. They are anticipating an amazing time in Greece and can’t wait to start their Mediterranean adventure.
