April 13, Northern Irish professional golfer Rory McIlroy became the sixth golfer to complete a career grand slam. In order to complete a career grand slam a golfer must achieve a victory in the British Open, the US Open, the PGA Championship, and of course the Masters at Augusta National. McIlroy’s win at the Masters has now properly cemented him with some of the game’s greatest players. McIlroy’s last major win before the Masters came almost 11 years ago with his second PGA Championship win at Valhalla Golf Course in 2014.
The major drought held by McIlroy was not without wins in of itself as he was able to accumulate 29 professional wins in the almost 11 year span. This PGA season alone, McIlroy won both the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am and the Players Championship within one month of each other. A big credit McIlory is attributing to his recent string of victories is his recent change from the Taylormade TP5x ball to the generic Taylormade TP5.
For the Masters tournament itself, McIlroy had to take on fellow pro Justin Rose in a playoff after the two had finished the four day tournament with final scores of -11. After a one hole playoff McIlroy emerged victorious after defeating Rose. This is the second win in a row that McIlroy has one in a playoff as that is the manner in which he won the Players Championship as well.
McIlroy’s playoff opponent, Justin Rose, was also no stranger to tournament playoffs. Rose had previously been in a Masters’ playoff in 2017 against Spanish pro Sergio Garcia. The playoffs seemed to be eerily similar as Rose also came up short and had to walk away with a second place finish after falling short.
As the Masters kicks off the professional golf major season, many are interested to see if this new rejuvenation of McIlroy will be able to propel him to further victories. McIlroy and Rose are two players in which many are expecting to perform well at the next major, the PGA Championship at Quail Hollow from May 15 through May 18.
