Start of a Season: Boys Volleyball at Morro Bay

The Morro Bay High School boys volleyball season has begun. Their first game was on the 20th of February, and took place in Arroyo Grande. Luke Konjoyan, the team’s star outside hitter, said that “the game went really about as well as I’d expected,” which he says means that they were crushed, but I think that it’s really a sign that the team is gonna improve.

The score wasn’t great, and the sets of the game itself numbered 0-3. This wasn’t a great omen for the team, but at our lowest, we’re open to the greatest change, and I think this will echo out for the team, and they will have a wonderful season.

The boys volleyball team also played on the 22nd against Valley Christian Academy, and made an almost-immediate resurgence. They redeemed themselves, winning the sets 3-0, and in the words of Luke, they played so well that the opposing team “felt like they had never played volleyball before,” which is a clear indication that the team is on the up-and-up. The team’s win was decisive, and although it is still early in the season, will give the team confidence to continue to win and play well.

The team most recently went to the Sanger Slam Tournament, at Sanger High School, though in actuality it was held at Clovis East High School. According to Luke, the team went 1-5, and the team was missing 5 of their starter players. They tried their best, but they finished with a less than satisfactory record.

While part of the team’s hopes are low for this season, the team thinks that since they’re now in the middle league, they have a greater chance of winning the league, and can succeed more than before because of the lowered league.

On the horizon for the team is the Volley at the Rock tournament, which Luke, and many other team members have expressed their excitement about. They think many of the teams in attendance are relatively even in skill and talent, meaning that the tournament is truly anyone’s game.

Where the team sees opportunity, they find success. I think this tournament can be a turning point for the season as they climb the league ladder, and can ascend to the top of the league.
