Here at MBHS, the Surf Club is a staple in many students' lives. Whether it's participating in competitions, or just going to the early morning practices, the surf club can represent a place of serenity and fun. The surf team has a huge variety of students and anyone can join, regardless of skill. “Surf club is a really fun and cool experience. The meets every Monday morning are epic, even if the surf sucks, because you’re out with your friends. Plus being able to compete is an awesome experience. I really have enjoyed it,” said freshman Ezra Bariel when asked about the general environment in Surf Club. From the practices to the competitions and socialization, Surf Club is all-around enjoyable and has a place for everyone.

Every Monday, members of Surf Club wake up bright and early to start their day with a surf session from seven to nine. Many participants say it gives them a head start to the day and allows them to focus. “It gives me an excuse and opportunity to surf in the morning and I think starts the week on a good note. I’ve been in surf club for the majority of my high school years, and overall it's been fun,” said Senior, Colton Taylor. Students who partake in it not only get early morning exercise, but they also have a reason to surf with their friends, as well as make new ones.

In addition to Monday practices, Surf Club enters and participates in competitions with other schools. The competitions vary in location from Pismo Beach to here at Morro Bay. The competitors are chosen based on who consistently shows up for practice and shows the most skill. Competitions are sorted with different heats, surfers have a chart that shows their heat number, time they are surfing and rash guard color (to differentiate between the heats). The coaches help out in various ways and offer improvements and helpful tips. The coaches and advisors for the surf team this year are Steve Gade, Becca Kelly and Josh Beckett. Competitions are challenging, but it immensely improves the team’s surfing skills and their sportsmanship.

Surf Club is a huge part of the culture at MBHS. It has brought an amazing amount of people together, and helped with the growth of countless students. Club members get an option to surf with their friends, while bettering themselves and start their week on the right foot. They also get to compete in competitions with other schools if they work hard and show they are ready to surf competitively. Surf club gives students a support they can fall back on, and an opportunity to meet new people that have the same interests.
