As spring begins and winter comes to an end, track and field, one of the most popular and busy spring sports commences. Track and field is a well liked sport and it allows student-athletes to work on their running or keep in shape for other sports. It is flexible enough for students to balance school and track and also practice other sports if necessary. The sport allows for a wide range of abilities, as any level of running can improve at practice and it is a great place to work on bettering skills as it has a variety of activities. The skills you can acquire range from short runs to long runs, long and high jumps, and throwing activities like shot put and javelin. Anyone in track and field can focus on any variation of these skills and refine them throughout the season.
This year, track and field at MBHS is already off to a great start. The meets have gone smoothly and the practices have contributed to the athletes’ potential already. “Honestly everything has gone really well. We all work on our personal stuff at practice and the meets are really fun,” said freshman Jozef Rouse. The meets have overall been successful for the runners, throwers and jumpers of MBHS. Sophomore Shelby Taylor and sophomore Wendy Wilson are already having outstanding seasons with Taylor breaking the 1200 dash record for MBHS and Wilson running in the Arcadia International across the county. The Pirates have swept the scores, beating the other schools at meets like the Nipomo Tri, the West Coast Relays and the Atascadero High School Relays.
There are about 64 students doing track with nine different coaches supervising and coaching their specific area of track and field. “It’s a lot of hard work and commitment, but everyone is really supportive of each other. There's always a lot of cheering for our teammates, and I think it really helps us cross the finish line as a team,” said freshman Saige Morgan. Track is an amazing community of people that are dedicated to their sport and uplifting their fellow runners.
MBHS track and field is doing great this season with athletes, coaches and meets. The athletes are already surpassing goals for 2025 and barely giving other schools a chance. This spring, track has a promising record and an even more promising future.
