On Thursday, the Morro Bay High School Pirates played and won against the Orosi High School Cardinals at home with a score of 35-25. This game was a part of the 2023 CIF Central Section Football Championship and allowed the team to progress to the quarter-finals. Both teams displayed dedication and truly great sportsmanship. According to hsfootbal, “There [has been] a long-standing rivalry between Morro Bay and Orosi high schools regarding football. These two teams have a history of intense and highly anticipated encounters on the field. Every game is filled with intensity and significance, as both teams strive to outdo each other and claim victory.” After the first quarter, Morro Bay was down 7-12, however, the team prevented two conversion attempts allowing them to regain their lead. Luca Macari, the running back, played very well carrying the offense. According to KSBY News, “[He had] two big runs for a Pirates touchdown.” The team played very strong in the second half including an interception and great defense to go along with it. In the end, Morro Bay stole the win from the 9-1 team and made them walk the plank.
In a recent interview with Nami Hoag, the running back, about their victory, he explains, “We couldn’t have done it without Manny. He really motivated us to play better in the second half. This was just what we needed.” This just goes to show that you don’t have to be the top seed. All it takes is solid teamwork and a strong work ethic.
To add on, Jared Eublera, the team’s backup nose guard, commented, “Both Manny and Nami played phenomenal. They really carried our team and we are all very excited to see where this will take us.”
Overall, Morro Bay truly demonstrated their capabilities and will continue to use this in their upcoming game against Bishop Union High School in the semi-finals.
