“Creative” is one common theme brought up when old friends were asked about senior AmaBella Montoya, a new student at MBHS. Montoya came from a small town in the mountains of western North Carolina. ”There was seriously nothing to do as a kid in my old town,” Montoya said, “so the best way to entertain myself was books and movies.” That rural upbringing is what Montoya attributes their creativity to.
Montoya had their worries about transferring to a new school in their senior year, but they’ve found that the move wasn’t nearly as scary as they thought it would be. Montoya thinks that they have settled in well. “It’s way different than my old school, but it’s fun. There’s a lot more to do, too.”
Montoya has joined MBHS’s Drama Program, as well as the Mock Trial team. Mock trial is new to them, but they’ve been a part of theater since middle school. Montoya said, “I didn’t get my first big role until my freshman year of high school, and that meant the world to me. I’ve always loved acting, so finally getting a role like that was just… monumental for me.”
Montoya went through many hobbies in life, but writing was the one thing that never faded. They said, “I normally don’t accept compliments or anything like that from my friends, but I can’t say, ‘No, I’m not creative at all.’ That wouldn’t be true.” College sophomore Star Iancu has been Montoya’s close friend for 4 years now. Iancu said, “I think they’re meant to be some sort of writer. They’re one of the smartest people I know.” Montoya certainly can’t disagree with the former. Whenever Montoya has free time, they often find themselves writing anything from plays, short stories, and poems, to long winded pop culture think pieces.
Montoya has absolutely no idea what the future holds for them. “I honestly… haven’t thought much about it,” they said. “I always ask myself: ‘What’s next?’, ‘Where am I going after high school?’ and I still have no idea. Like, I want so much out of life. I can’t do it all. I want to act, and write, and do all these other things. But honestly, sometimes I think I dream too big for what’s realistically possible.” The weight of the future is heavy, but Montoya hopes to figure it out eventually.
